A Safe Place advocates Annabel Dannheim and Frejae Burrows met recently with Massachusetts State Representative Dylan Fernandes to talk about important pieces of legislation related to domestic violence and healthy relationships that we hope will be passed.
Thank you Representative Fernandes for your continued support of A Safe Place and our mission!
In support of Supervised Visitation Awareness Month during the month of May, A Safe Place staff wore orange to raise awareness in support of our Orange Ribbon Campaign and the services A Safe Place offers within the community for safe exchanges and visits for children and families.
A Safe Place’s Supervised Visitation Center provides a secure and comfortable environment for children to maintain a relationship with both parents while attempting to isolate them from conflict.
Whether providing a neutral environment for custody exchanges that prevents direct contact between parents/guardians or by supervising an entire visit between a child and a non custodial parent or relative
(where they can interact in a comfortable playroom setting while the visit is monitored by trained staff and on-site security), A Safe Place is here for our Nantucket families.
All Supervised Visitation services are free of charge.
During the month of May, A Safe Place collaborated with the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club for a family focused poster contest celebrating healthy families. Club members created artwork for A Safe Place’s Supervised Visitation Center and were entered into the contest by grade level. Check out the winners for Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grades 3 and above, showcasing happy and healthy family moments.
A Safe Place’s bilingual advocate, Tania Pereira, traveled to Newport Beach, California recently for Supervised Visitation Network’s Annual Conference.
At the conference survivor stories of strength, resilience, and perseverance were showcased in order to improve the systems that have failed them.
Attendees were additionally educated on new ways to take action in helping families impacted by domestic violence, poverty, and substance use while connecting and strategizing on how to to expand the collective voice on the importance of professionally trained supervised visitation providers.
A Safe Place, in collaboration with Nantucket High School, recently dropped off six hundred and fifty anonymous surveys to island students in grades nine through twelve.
The anonymous survey project was spearheaded by Nantucket High School students Anna Popnikolova and Sarah Swenson, with the help of A Safe Place’s Rachel Larson Devine and Nantucket High School Principal Mandy Vasil, in order to collect more specific data related to the island’s student population with teen dating violence and sexual assault.
The optional surveys will gather information that will better help A Safe Place with prevention education and impact efforts within Nantucket High School specifically.
Thank you to all student participants and a special shout out to Anna and Sarah for their passion with bringing this project to life!
A Safe Place staff met with A Call for Change Helpline recently to discuss their services for prevention, connection and impact. While A Safe Place is committed to serving survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, we feel that A Call for Change Helpline is a great resource for partners who may have questions or need help in regards to offending behavior (as well as family members, friends, and professionals who may also benefit from this resource.) Brochures for this service are available at A Safe Place.
A Safe Place’s Director of Development, Rachel Larson Devine, recently met with peers in marketing, outreach, and development sectors at the Nantucket Development Collaborative hosted by Community Foundation for Nantucket.
These collaborations are an ongoing initiative where Nantucket non-profits can share resources, discuss events, and connect within and for the community.
Jackson Katz, Ph.D., is an educator, author, filmmaker, and cultural theorist who is internationally renowned for his pioneering in the fields of gender violence prevention education and media literacy. Jackson is a global leader in the growing movement of men working to promote gender equality and prevent gender violence.
Dr. Katz is co-founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), a widely used sexual and domestic violence prevention initiative in college and professional athletics across North America, as well as the US military.
Jackson and his MVP colleagues have additionally worked extensively with schools, youth sports associations, and community organizations. Jackson was the first to implement programs into professional sports, inclusive of the Boston Red Sox & New England Patriots. He was also the first to implement these programs within the US military, working with the Department of Defense. Jackson is a key architect of the “bystander” approach which is a broadly popular strategy used in both the sexual assault and relationship abuse fields.
A Safe Place’s summer event will be a cocktail party and a presentation by Dr. Katz. The event will be held at Great Harbor Yacht Club from 5:00pm to 7:30pm on Thursday, July 13th.
This event is meant for a mixed audience because we know our efforts to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault are that much stronger when partnering with men who share our commitment to gender violence prevention.
In years prior, A Safe Place has sponsored speakers who have told their personal stories of domestic abuse and sexual assault. These events have featured women and have been attended primarily by women. Men, however, should also be part of our efforts to end domestic violence and sexual assault.
Tickets for A Safe Place’s summer event are $500.00 each and can be reserved by reaching out to info@asafeplacenantucket.org or 508.228.0561.
Thank you for your support in creating direct impact within our Nantucket community!
We look forward to seeing you on July 13!
