Linda Hoey began her years as a board member with A Safe Place in 2011. Serving as our Board President for the last four years, she has brought vision, guidance, and compassion to our organization and its mission. We will greatly miss her leadership as we say goodbye to over a decade’s worth of dedication and friendship. Our gratitude is with you, Linda, as we say goodbye.
Today, July 1, Linda officially passes the torch to incoming Board President, Jane Loose, who has been with A Safe Place since 2017. As Jane transitions from Vice President to President this year, we greatly look forward to her leadership and passion with our next chapter.
A Safe Place’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program Manager, Frejae Burrows, attended the Massachusetts Office For Victim Assistance’s Training Academy (MTA) this past June as part of A Safe Place’s continued education programs. The MTA provides specialized training opportunities for individuals who directly serve crime victims and survivors. The MTA’s intention is to strengthen collaborative relationships within the field while building necessary skills to ensure effective advocacy for victims and survivors.
Frejae attended the academy as part of their Leadership Track program, which provides experienced advocates with additional leadership skills and information about emerging trends. Through workshops focused on trauma informed supervision, restorative justice, and policy and legislative advocacy, Frejae was able to expand her knowledge and skills while having the opportunity to network with fellow advocates from all over the Commonwealth who work with victims and survivors of crime.
You may have seen A Safe Place more visible within the community lately with our educational tables around the island. Why is this important?… because domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, exploitation, harassment, and bullying DO NOT discriminate and gentle reminders that we are never alone has subtle yet great impact.

A Safe Place joined the Pride Welcome Mingle at The Corner Table during Nantucket Pride festivities during the month of June. This resource fair style event showcased island businesses, organizations, and religious, spiritual, and educational communities that are welcoming, inclusive, and active of and in LGBTQ + communities and families.
The Rainbow Suncatcher Art Project, in collaboration with the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club, was an activity held in June to engage club members artistically as a group and independently, while learning more about the history of pride month and its importance.
This project was led by A Safe Place’s Annabel Dannheim, who also runs the Rainbow Club group in collaboration with NBGC.
The Rainbow Club meets at certain times during the year and is designed to allow club members a safe and confidential space to foster friendships in an environment free of fear or judgement and where students can have their voices heard.
A Safe Place staff traveled off island this year for Staff Team Building Day 2023!
We enjoyed some down time fostering relationships and team cohesiveness, while adding a little competition in the mix with teams competing against each other in escape room challenges as well as bowling.
You may have seen our A Safe Place services ads in various media outlets recently. Thanks to a visibility grant through the Department of Public Health, we have been able to provide more outreach within the Nantucket community and push our gentle reminders to survivors in that they are never alone.
Rachel Larson Devine, A Safe Place’s Director of Development, has been hard at work designing and distributing our visibility campaigns to various outlets as we dive further into outreach.
While these topics are difficult to talk about, it’s important that we do.
A Safe Place’s summer 2023 fundraiser event will be this July 13, starting at 5:00PM, at Great Harbor Yacht Club.

We are happy to receive shipments, drop offs (5B Windy Way) or we can arrange pick up (call 508.228.0561 or email info@asafeplacenantucket.org). A Safe Place also has a donation box at the mid island Stop & Shop where items can be left.
Items of special interest are: hypoallergenic diapers in sizes 3, 4 & 5, fragrance free baby wipes, baby shampoo, shampoo & conditioner, soap/body wash, toothbrushes & toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, razors, body lotion, and laundry detergent.
