A Safe Place Welcomes New Board of Directors President, Jane Loose
On July 1, A Safe welcomed Jane Loose as President of our Board of Directors. Jane has been with A Safe Place since 2017, previously holding the title of Co-Vice President with fellow prior board member Suellen Ward.
Jane has called Nantucket her home since she and her husband, John, retired to the island twenty-five years ago from New York. They continue to spend part of their winters in Manhattan, have enjoyed traveling over the years, and have a love for opera, the symphony, chamber music, and live theater.
When not putting her passion into her work here at A Safe Place, Jane can often be found in her garden, walking in the Moors, reading a book, or playing bridge with friends. Jane is also involved with Learning Ally, a nonprofit education solutions organization, where she has spent innumerable hours recording high school and college text books for blind and dyslexic students.
As a prior teacher of twenty-seven years in the Corning, New York public school system, Jane initially taught in the classroom, but quickly took interest in focusing on elementary age students with reading and writing problems. After receiving two Masters’ degrees, she specialized in the diagnosis and remediation of children with learning disabilities. As a learning specialist, Jane led the redesign and implementation of a comprehensive language arts program in the school district where she raised her family.
Jane has two sons (one who passed away of a rare stomach cancer two years ago), two daughters-in-law, and five wonderful grandchildren between the ages of seventeen and twenty-three. They gather as a family on Nantucket frequently and never miss a Thanksgiving on the island.
Jane is often reminded by her husband that there was once a day that she said she had no interest in joining a board on Nantucket, nor was she interested in working in development… yet here she is, A Safe Place’s newest Board of Directors President.
A Safe Place is beyond fortunate and proud to have Jane take the reigns among our Board of Directors and we look forward to her continued dedication, compassion, and leadership within our organization.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support A Safe Place at our sold out 2023 summer fundraiser event Inspiring Change: An Evening With Dr. Jackson Katz. This was our first year hosting an evening event as well as showcasing an educator, and we could not be more proud of the turnout and feedback.
Dr. Katz presented on the importance of how we view, speak of, and react to abuse as well as the importance of leadership within families and communities and what that truly means. Whether a business owner, an executive, a first responder, a teacher, a parent, or any role in which you are interacting or influencing other people, the role of leadership is an important one. Dr. Katz broke down the topic of “bystander intervention” and gave examples in shifts of perspective and action that has the power to create real change.
A Safe Place looks forward to working further with Dr. Jackson Katz and his programs. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help create change via education, please reach out to info@asafeplacenantucket.org or call 508.228.0561.
A Safe Place truly believes that change lies one person at a time in one community at a time.

A Safe Place additionally hosted Dr. Jackson Katz at St. Paul’s Church for a free public speaking engagement for the community. Board President Jane Loose spoke at the event as well as Executive Director Jennifer Frazee. Nantucket High School students Anna Popnikolova and Sarah Swenson were recognized that evening for their work with A Safe Place on the topic of teen dating violence.
Thank you to everyone who attended!
Our Pop Up Friday information tables have been in full effect this summer at local businesses and playgrounds. A Safe Place is working hard at humanizing our organization within the community and creating connection. These information tables not only showcase our services, but they allow for our advocates and staff to answer questions, engage with fellow community members, and educate on what A Safe Place is working on for impact.
Whether you are a survivor looking for information or are a person who is simply curious about what we are up to within the Nantucket community, our Pop Up Fridays provide that connection.
Thank you to Nantucket Land Bank, the Sconset Market, Espresso To Go, and Yummy for your support with locations during the month of July.
Check out our online calendar here to see where we will be popping up next!
A Safe Place Executive Director, Jennifer Frazee, was recently interviewed by MVY Radio on July 9.
Check out her spotlight with Joe Stickles, where Jennifer breaks down A Safe Place’s impact within the Nantucket community, the history of our organization, and highlights the topic of “bystander intervention.”
Back to School Resource & Services Fair Hosted by A Safe Place & Source Hub
A Safe Place and Source Hub invite the Nantucket community to our Back to School Resource & Services Fair on Thursday August 24th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Nantucket Intermediate School (cafeteria). This resource fair is for all families who have children returning to school this fall and is inclusive of a special focus on resources and services available to our island immigrant community.
Both on and off island organizations will be on hand providing information and, in some instances, services covering topics such as health, education, food security, housing, financial stability, knowing your rights, and documentation, with resource providers being asked to provide information in multiple languages. Children’s schools supplies will be available to all families while supplies last.
The growing list of providers who will attend this event include but are not limited to: A Safe Place, Nantucket Community School, Nantucket Public Schools, Nantucket Family Resource Center, Federation for Children with Special Needs, Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands Health Connector, and the Health Ministry.
If you would like to donate to this special event, A Safe Place is happily collecting school supplies as well as children’s learning and play items for a door prize basket. We look forward to a fun and informative evening for all!
Thank you to J.McLaughlin for benefitting A Safe Place at their recent Sip, Ship & Celebrate Summer event at 1 Salem Street. 15% of sales on July 26 went toward our mission within the Nantucket community.
J.Mclaughlin will be hosting another sip and shop event benefitting A Safe Place on Thursday, September 14 from 11am to 4pm.
We are grateful for your support!
A Safe Place is looking for some additional personal care items for local survivors. We are currently still in need of soap/body wash, shampoo/conditioner, diapers and laundry detergent. We are happy to receive shipments or drop offs at 5B Windy Way, Nantucket — or we can arrange pick up (call 508.228.0561 or email info@asafeplacenantucket.org).
Remember, A Safe Place also has a donation box at the mid island Stop & Shop where items can be left as well. Thank you for thinking of us with any of these items.
A huge shout out to everyone who has sent us wish list items within the last few weeks – those items are already making impact within the community!
