A Safe Place Collaborations

A Safe Place advocate, Crystal, taught a 10 week Date SMART course for 6th graders in collaboration with the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club. This program was designed to allow Club members to examine their feelings about dating and relationships, as well as encourage teens to become community advocates for relationships based on equality and mutual respect. Date SMART was also intended to increase young people’s understanding and build the skills they need to achieve healthy relationships free of violence and abuse for themselves. In one of the final lessons, the youth participants played an engaging game of Dating Jeopardy as pictured below. A Safe Place looks forward to continued collaborations with the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club!

A Safe Place advocates, Frejae, Crystal, Kathy, and Suzanne, taught classes on consent, sexual harassment, and healthy relationships for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders at the Nantucket New School. This is our second year in a row working with the staff at the New School to help design a program for their students to discuss how to ask for consent, what enthusiastic, verbal consent looks like, and how to respond to “no” respectfully. We look forward to continued work at the Nantucket New School in the new year!

PFLAG is the United States’ first and largest organization uniting parents, families, and allies with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. PFLAG National is the national organization, which provides support to the PFLAG network of local chapters. A Safe Place’s very own advocates, Kathy and Suzanne, have become facilitators in this organization. Groups co-sponsored by A Safe Place and the PFLAG organization will begin February 5th at the Handlebar Cafe! For more information please email: sfronzuto@asafeplacenantucket.org

The Giving Season….

This year A Safe Place was lucky enough to be the recipient of three separate giving trees in the community. Through these donations we were able to provide wonderful holiday gifts to 12 families and have a fully stocked pantry with client needs items such as hygiene supplies, socks, hats and scarves. We have to give a giant THANK YOU to the Nantucket Town offices, Nantucket Cycle and Fitness, and Wicked Island Bakery. We are so lucky to have you all in our community! Thank you for all that you do to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault!
