A Safe Place’s Rachel Larson Devine attended Dr. Jackson Katz’s Mentors in Violence Prevention Leadership Training in Amherst, MA this past November. The program consisted of three days of interactive learning with Dr. Katz and his MVP Strategies colleagues.Â
The Mentors in Violence Prevention program began in 1993 at Northeastern University in Boston. It was the first large-scale prevention initiative in the college and professional sports culture and in the United States Department of Defense. The program brought bystander training to the sexual assault and domestic violence fields.Â
A Safe Place welcomed Dr. Katz to Nantucket this past July as our summer keynote speaker and we are moving forward learning more about his programs and how to potentially integrate them into the Nantucket community for lasting impact.Â
A Safe Place Executive Director, Jennifer Frazee, and Director of Development, Rachel Larson Devine, recently attended the 26th Annual Philanthropy Day on Cape Cod.Â
The mission of the event is to provide Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard’s non-profit community with high-quality education and to celebrate the impact of philanthropy within the region.
This year’s keynote speaker was James Morton, retired President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater Boston.Â
A Safe Place is proud to be a part of Nantucket Fire Department’s reusable bag initiative promoting fire safety within the community. A Safe Place’s ad space, spotlighting our free and confidential services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, was made possible by grant money from the Department of Public Health.Â
Be sure to check out A Safe Place’s holiday trees in the downtown area this month!
We are proud to be a part of the Nantucket Historical Association’s Festival of Trees throughout the month at the Nantucket Whaling Museum, as well as the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Stroll trees in the downtown core district. Our A Safe Place Main Street tree was kindly donated to us by Nantucket Bank and is located in front of Murray’s Toggery Shop.Â
Our theme this year is “Start By Believing” as a way to inspire change. We encourage you to visit our trees as a way to get inspired as well as see the impact we are making each and every day within the Nantucket community.Â
Remember… we are all healing from something. Be kind to yourself and to each other.Â
Thank you to Nantucket Cycling and Fitness and Wicked Island Bakery for their continued support of our A Safe Place families. During the month of December at each of these local businesses, you can find “Giving Trees” equipped with wish list items that our local survivor families are in need of this holiday season. If you would like to be part of the magic, please stop by Nantucket Cycling and Fitness or Wicked Island Bakery. Thank you for your support!Â
Thank you to Nantucket Bank (a division of Rockland Trust), for the donation of our Main Street tree!
This donation allows us to create further visibility for survivors within the community, while also raising awareness for domestic violence and sexual assault locally and via each and every visitor who views our tree during Stroll Weekend.
Thank you Nantucket Bank – we appreciate you!Â
We would like to extend our gratitude to Stop & Shop and the Nantucket community for your continued support via the Community Bag Program. A Safe Place received a portion of sales for each reusable bag sold at the downtown Stop & Shop location during the month of November. Thank you for helping create impact for our local survivors!
A Safe Place is Hiring!
A Safe Place is looking for new or used (in good condition) hockey equipment for our youth sports programs. If you have any equipment that would fit elementary school through high school aged students, please keep us in mind if you no longer have use for it!Â
