“Why didn’t you leave?” is one of the most common questions asked of domestic violence survivors by those looking at another person’s journey from the outside. If it was that bad, a person being abused would leave, right?

Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. There are many layers and many factors involved in why a person stays in an abusive relationship. We break down eleven of those reasons as we continue to educate and shift perspectives on a very complex topic. By educating yourself and understanding how there are many things that we may have to “unlearn” as a society in how we view (and often judge) domestic violence survivors, you can be part of the change that’s greatly needed for those who are impacted by domestic violence.

Remember, your words matter. We need to stop asking the wrong questions and start asking the right ones. Instead of “Why didn’t you leave?” perhaps the question becomes “Why did they abuse you?”
