The Linda Hoey Community Impact Fund is a special appeal specifically designed to honor A Safe Place’s In Memoriam Chair Emerita, Linda Hoey, and her passion and commitment to the importance of local outreach and community connection.

This fund will allow A Safe Place the ability to grow its engagement level via events, activities and education initiatives that promote healthy relationships with self and with others while creating connection and breaking the stigmas. This fund will not only bring impact within our mission here at A Safe Place, but it will create a ripple effect of progress within other arenas such as substance use disorders, suicide, mental health, and more as people learn to connect without judgment. The more we open the conversations, the less hard the topics become. There is nothing more important than putting continued education, necessary tools, the promotion of healthy boundaries, and the building of positive coping mechanisms in the hands of our youth and adult populations when it comes to creating lasting and sustainable impact for the society of today as well as our society of tomorrow.

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, up to $10,000 in donations will be matched for
The Linda Hoey Community Impact Fund!

A Safe Place is pleased to announce that we have been awarded two grants through Community Foundation for Nantucket’s ReMain Nantucket Fund. Grants were provided to A Safe Place to establish a cultural vitality project that will allow our organization to enhance the cultural experiences of those who work for and receive services through A Safe Place and to engage in strategic planning with a professional strategic planning consultant. A Safe Place is excited to have these opportunities that will help guide us into the future with a focus on providing the most effective and supportive services possible. We are grateful for the ReMain Nantucket Fund for believing in and supporting the work that we do!

A Safe Place popped up at a variety of playgrounds and local businesses last month as part of our outreach and prevention initiatives.

Thank you to the Town of Nantucket, Nantucket Land Bank, The Surf, and Bartlett’s Farm for your support of our mission via Pop Up Friday sponsor locations!

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. While topics concerning domestic violence, as well as links to suicide, are difficult to talk about, it is necessary that we do.

A Safe Place would like to remind everyone that no one is ever alone. We are here 24-hours per day via our hotline at 508.228.2111 as well as in office at 5B Windy Way Monday through Friday (8am to 5pm) with advocates fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Bulgarian.  A Safe Place also has an online chat feature available on our website www.asafeplacenantucket.org Monday through Friday from 10am-4pm.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by domestic violence and are in crisis (or if you simply need to talk), please reach out to us anytime. Our services are 100% free and confidential.

From the Resource Center on Domestic Violence: Child Protection and Custody:
“Domestic violence dramatically increases suicidal risk in intimate partners and the children of domestic violence victims. The World Health Organization found that one of the most “consistent risk factors for suicide attempts [for women] after adjusting for probable common mental health disorders” was intimate partner violence. At least one study has shown that “36% of female survivors have considered suicide and 23% of domestic violence survivors” have attempted suicide. All domestic violence providers should remember that victim-sensitive referrals to counseling and therapy could help mitigate trauma. Trauma includes exposure to violence as well as system-involvement, child-removal and the simple fact of being in a position of legal powerlessness.”

A Safe Place’s food pantry storage for survivor families is greatly in need of non perishable food items like pasta, rice, canned vegetables, chicken broth (we are fully stocked for soups), peanut butter, jelly, apple sauce, juice, children’s juice boxes, snack items, cereal, breakfast bars, condiments, baby formula, etc.

If you are looking for alternate ways to support our mission within the Nantucket community, please consider donating a non perishable food item to our donation box located at Stop & Shop’s 31 Sparks Avenue location. We also accept donations directly at A Safe Place (5B Windy Way).

No donation is too small.

Thank you for keeping us in mind, especially now that school has begun for many of our survivor families.

A Safe Place will be hosting information tables at the Nantucket Island Fair and Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Island Health Fair this month. Stop by and say hello!

Did you know that A Safe Place also educates local businesses and staff on The Bystander Approach, identifying and understanding healthy boundaries and more? Ask us how we can help!
